3 Day/ 60 Miles.
Back in another life (some of you knew me then) I went through a period of change. No, not the one I’m going through now. This was different. I decided I was tired of fearing life. I wanted a challenge. Or 5. Every year I challenged myself to tackle a fear. I went to the dentist every 4 months until I no longer dreaded the thought. I learned how to swim. I decided I wanted to attempt something physical. Something HUGE for me. I have never been athletic. I spent years avoiding P.E. Then I worked in the health club industry for years and rarely saw the inside of the gym. So i joined my friend in training for the Susan G. Komen 3 day/60 mile walk.
I never really believed I would walk 60 miles. I figured I’d do what I could and raise money at the same time. Wasn’t that the important part? After a few weeks of 2-4 mile walks I was ready to do more. It wasn’t long before 6-8 mile walks were nothing but a long stroll. I walked mile after mile, forcing myself to take a day off every week. I walked first thing in the morning and late at night. When I was bored at work I walked in laps up and down the halls. I literally couldn’t stop. It was addictive. I began training with weights with a trainer ( yo Brian!) and even learned to climb a rock wall. i was strong! I was IN SHAPE.
The walk came that November and I had logged about 500 miles in training. I can’t say it was easy. We got hit with 80+ degree weather one day, pouring rain the next. But we made it. We crossed the finish line. Words cannot describe what this experience meant to me. I felt invincible! Until a few months later when I began to experience foot pain.
As I now know, I won’t be participating in this event again. I will have surgery in January to repair damage to my foot. Apparently I have a somewhat awkward way of walking which has caused problems most people would not have encountered. This makes me sad. With the walk coming up in less than 2 weeks and my financial situation precarious I can’t really do much to contribute. So…I came up with a plan. I am auctioning off a bracelet with all of the money going to Breast Cancer Research. I will post the highest bid daily until Friday November 9th at 12 noon. The highest bidder gets the bracelet including free shipping. If you would like to bid, please see the “click here” box on my home page.
next blog…..what do you do for an encore?
